Understanding Fracture Rehabilitation

A fracture occurs when a bone breaks due to trauma, stress, or underlying medical conditions like osteoporosis. While bones have a natural ability to heal, proper rehabilitation is essential to restore strength, prevent complications, and regain full mobility. Without targeted therapy, stiffness, muscle weakness, and joint limitations can persist long after the bone has healed.

The Stages of Fracture Recovery

Rehabilitation after a fracture typically progresses through the following phases:

  1. Immobilization & Healing (Acute Phase) – Involves casting, splinting, or surgical fixation to stabilize the bone and promote healing.
  2. Early Mobilization (Post-Cast/Brace Removal) – Focuses on restoring range of motion, reducing stiffness, and preventing muscle atrophy.
  3. Strengthening & Functional Recovery – Gradual reintroduction of strength training and functional exercises to regain movement.

Return to Normal Activity – Tailored rehabilitation to ensure full recovery and prevent re-injury.

Common Types of Fractures We Treat

Our team provides rehabilitation for a wide range of fractures, including:

  • Arm & Wrist Fractures – Common in falls and sports injuries, affecting the radius, ulna, or humerus.
  • Leg & Ankle Fractures – Often caused by high-impact trauma or twisting injuries, affecting the tibia, fibula, or femur.
  • Shoulder & Clavicle Fractures – Resulting from direct impact or falls onto the shoulder.
  • Hip Fractures – Common in older adults, requiring comprehensive rehabilitation for mobility restoration.
  • Stress Fractures – Repetitive strain injuries affecting athletes and active individuals.
  • Spinal Fractures – Often due to trauma or osteoporosis, requiring specialized care.

Why Rehabilitation is Crucial After a Fracture

While bones naturally heal, proper rehabilitation is essential to:

  • Prevent Stiffness & Joint Restriction – Immobilization can lead to reduced flexibility and joint limitations.
  • Regain Strength & Muscle Function – Muscles weaken during immobilization and need targeted strengthening.
  • Improve Coordination & Balance – Essential for safe movement and preventing future falls.
  • Enhance Circulation & Reduce Swelling – Gentle movement promotes healing and prevents complications.
  • Ensure a Safe Return to Daily Activities – A structured program helps rebuild confidence and function.

Signs You Need Physiotherapy After a Fracture

If you’ve recently had a fracture, you may experience:

  • Pain & Stiffness – Discomfort or difficulty moving the affected limb.
  • Muscle Weakness – Loss of strength after immobilization.
  • Swelling & Reduced Circulation – Persistent swelling in the area of injury.
  • Limited Range of Motion – Difficulty bending or straightening the joint.
  • Balance & Coordination Issues – Feeling unsteady or hesitant with movement.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, physiotherapy can help speed up your recovery and ensure you regain full function safely.
