Heel Spur & Heel Pain Treatment in Hamilton

Heel pain can make every step uncomfortable, affecting your ability to walk, stand, or exercise. Whether it’s a sharp pain in the morning or a persistent ache throughout the day, heel pain is often caused by conditions like heel spurs or plantar fasciitis. At Flexwell Physiotherapy, we provide expert treatment to relieve heel pain, address its underlying causes, and help you get back to pain-free movement.

Understanding Heel Spurs & Heel Pain

A heel spur is a bony growth that forms on the underside of the heel bone (calcaneus) due to prolonged strain on the foot. While some people with heel spurs experience no symptoms, others may suffer from significant heel pain, particularly when walking or standing.

Heel pain is often linked to plantar fasciitis, a condition where the plantar fascia (a thick band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes) becomes inflamed. This inflammation is commonly caused by repetitive stress, improper footwear, or biomechanical issues.

Common Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain can result from various factors, including:

  • Heel Spurs: Calcium deposits that form over time due to prolonged stress on the heel bone.
  • Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the plantar fascia, leading to stabbing pain, especially in the morning.
  • Achilles Tendinitis: Overuse or strain of the Achilles tendon, causing pain in the back of the heel.
  • Excessive Foot Pronation: Flat feet or poor arch support causing abnormal stress on the heel.
  • Improper Footwear: Shoes with inadequate arch support or cushioning.
  • Obesity or Sudden Weight Gain: Extra weight increasing pressure on the heels.
  • Repetitive High-Impact Activities: Running, jumping, or prolonged standing.

Arthritis: Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis affecting the heel joint.

Recognizing Heel Spur & Heel Pain Symptoms

Heel pain can present in different ways depending on its cause. Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp, Stabbing Pain in the Morning: Pain that improves after walking but worsens after prolonged standing.
  • Tenderness in the Heel: Sensitivity when pressing on the bottom of the heel.
  • Swelling or Inflammation: Redness and irritation in the heel area.
  • Pain After Exercise: Increased discomfort after walking, running, or long periods of standing.
  • Stiffness or Reduced Flexibility: Difficulty flexing the foot or walking normally.

If heel pain is affecting your daily activities, seeking professional care can help prevent worsening symptoms and long-term complications.

Risk Factors for Heel Pain & Heel Spurs

Certain factors may increase the likelihood of developing heel pain or spurs:

  • Age: More common in middle-aged adults and older individuals.
  • Flat Feet or High Arches: Poor foot mechanics increasing heel stress.
  • Prolonged Standing or Walking: Jobs requiring extended standing on hard surfaces.
  • Athletic Activities: Running, jumping, and impact-heavy sports.
  • Excess Body Weight: Increased pressure on the foot structures.

Tight Calf Muscles: Reduced flexibility causing strain on the heel.
