Knee Pain Treatment in Hamilton

Knee pain can make even the simplest daily activities—like walking, climbing stairs, or bending down—feel like a challenge. Whether caused by an injury, arthritis, or overuse, persistent knee pain can significantly impact your mobility and overall quality of life. At Flexwell Physiotherapy, we provide expert physiotherapy and chiropractic care to help relieve pain, restore function, and get you moving comfortably again.

Understanding Knee Pain

The knee is one of the most complex joints in the body, playing a crucial role in movement and weight-bearing. It absorbs impact during activities like walking, running, and jumping, making it highly susceptible to injuries and wear-and-tear conditions. Knee pain can result from sudden trauma, degenerative changes, or underlying biomechanical imbalances.

Key Structures of the Knee Joint

To better understand knee pain, it helps to know the major components of the knee:

  • Bones: The knee consists of three main bones—the femur (thighbone), tibia (shinbone), and patella (kneecap).
  • Cartilage: A protective cushion that reduces friction and absorbs shock within the joint.
  • Ligaments: Strong bands of tissue, including the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and PCL (posterior cruciate ligament), that provide stability.
  • Tendons: These connect muscles to bones, allowing movement.
  • Menisci: Two C-shaped pieces of cartilage that act as shock absorbers and help stabilize the knee.

Understanding the knee’s structure is essential in diagnosing pain and tailoring an effective treatment plan.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain can stem from various factors, including:

  • Osteoarthritis: A degenerative joint condition that leads to stiffness, pain, and swelling.
  • Ligament Injuries: Sprains or tears in the ACL, MCL, or other ligaments, often due to sports or sudden movements.
  • Meniscus Tears: A common injury caused by twisting motions or direct impact.
  • Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons, frequently seen in runners and athletes.
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: Pain around the kneecap, often triggered by repetitive movements or poor tracking of the kneecap.
  • Bursitis: Inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the knee joint.
  • Knee Fractures: Breaks in the bone due to trauma or falls.
  • Overuse Injuries: Strain caused by repetitive movements such as running or jumping.
  • Biomechanical Issues: Poor posture, muscle imbalances, or flat feet contributing to knee strain.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disorder that leads to joint inflammation and pain.

Recognizing Knee Pain Symptoms

The symptoms of knee pain vary depending on the cause but commonly include:

  • Pain or Tenderness: Discomfort in and around the knee, worsening with movement.
  • Swelling: Inflammation or fluid buildup around the joint.
  • Stiffness: Reduced range of motion, especially after periods of rest.
  • Instability: A feeling that the knee may buckle or give way.
  • Clicking or Popping Sounds: Often linked to ligament or cartilage damage.
  • Weakness: Difficulty supporting weight or standing for long periods.
  • Redness or Warmth: Signs of inflammation or infection.
  • Pain with Certain Movements: Discomfort while climbing stairs, squatting, or sitting for extended periods.

If your knee pain persists or worsens, seeking professional care is crucial to prevent further damage and promote long-term healing.

Risk Factors for Knee Pain

Some factors may increase the likelihood of developing knee pain:

  • Age: Conditions like osteoarthritis become more common as we get older.
  • Sports & High-Impact Activities: Running, jumping, and sudden directional changes increase the risk of injury.
  • Previous Knee Injuries: A past injury can make the knee more vulnerable to future problems.
  • Excess Weight: Extra body weight places additional stress on the knee joint.
  • Muscle Weakness: Insufficient strength in the surrounding muscles can lead to instability and strain.

Poor Alignment: Flat feet, improper posture, or misalignment in the legs can contribute to knee pain.
