Understanding Neck Pain: Causes & Symptoms

The neck (cervical spine) is made up of muscles, ligaments, and vertebrae that support the head and allow movement. Due to its mobility, the neck is highly vulnerable to pain and injuries.

Common Causes of Neck Pain

  • Poor Posture – Sitting at a desk for long hours, looking down at your phone, or slouching can strain the neck muscles, leading to stiffness and pain.
  • Whiplash & Auto Injuries – Sudden acceleration or deceleration (common in car accidents) can cause neck strain, stiffness, and headaches.
  • Muscle Tension & Stress – Emotional stress can cause the neck muscles to tighten, leading to chronic discomfort.
  • Herniated Disc & Nerve Compression – A bulging or slipped disc in the cervical spine can press on nerves, causing pain, tingling, or weakness in the arms.
  • Arthritis & Degenerative Changes – Age-related wear and tear on the neck joints can lead to chronic pain and reduced flexibility.

Common Symptoms of Neck Conditions

  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion
  • Sharp or burning pain in the neck, shoulders, or upper back
  • Headaches, often starting at the base of the skull
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms
  • Dizziness or balance issues associated with neck tension

Common Neck Conditions We Treat

Tech Neck & Postural Strain

With the rise of smartphones and prolonged desk work, tech neck has become one of the most common causes of neck pain. Slouching forward for extended periods causes muscle imbalances, leading to pain and stiffness.

How Physiotherapy Helps:

  • Postural correction exercises to strengthen neck and back muscles
  • Manual therapy to relieve tension in tight muscles
  • Ergonomic advice to improve your workstation and sitting habits

Example: Emily, a 30-year-old office worker, suffered from daily neck pain and headaches. After just four weeks of therapy focused on strengthening and posture correction, she felt significant relief and was able to work pain-free.

Whiplash & Car Accident Injuries

Whiplash occurs when the head moves forcefully forward and backward, straining the neck muscles and ligaments. It is a common injury after rear-end car accidents.

Symptoms of Whiplash:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness and difficulty concentrating
  • Shoulder and upper back pain

How Physiotherapy Helps:

  • Gentle mobilization techniques to restore normal movement
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises to prevent long-term stiffness
  • Massage therapy and dry needling to reduce muscle spasms

Cervical Radiculopathy (Pinched Nerve)

A pinched nerve in the neck can cause pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates into the shoulders and arms. It is often caused by herniated discs or bone spurs pressing on spinal nerves.

How Physiotherapy Helps:

  • Spinal decompression techniques to relieve nerve pressure
  • Strength training to support proper spinal alignment
  • Manual therapy and traction therapy to ease nerve irritation

Example: James, a 45-year-old mechanic, experienced shooting pain down his arm due to a herniated disc. Through six weeks of spinal decompression therapy and targeted exercises, his pain was significantly reduced, and he regained full use of his arm.

Cervical Osteoarthritis & Degenerative Disc Disease

As we age, the cartilage between neck joints can wear down, leading to stiffness and chronic pain. Cervical osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease are common conditions that cause long-term discomfort.

Symptoms:

  • Chronic neck stiffness and aching pain
  • Grinding or cracking sensations with movement
  • Reduced flexibility in the neck

How Physiotherapy Helps:

  • Gentle stretching exercises to maintain mobility
  • Heat therapy and massage to improve circulation
  • Postural training to prevent excessive joint strain

Tension Headaches & Neck Pain

Many headaches originate from tight neck muscles and poor posture. These are called cervicogenic headaches, and they often worsen with stress or prolonged sitting.

How Physiotherapy & Massage Therapy Help:

  • Trigger point release therapy to relax tight muscles
  • Corrective exercises to improve neck stability
  • Massage therapy to relieve muscle tension and enhance relaxation
