Postpartum Physiotherapy in Hamilton: A Recovery Roadmap

What Your Body Needs After Birth (and When to Start)

Your body goes through incredible changes during pregnancy and birth—but once the baby arrives, the focus often shifts away from you.

If you’re experiencing pain, weakness, leaking, or you just don’t feel like yourself yet, postpartum physiotherapy in Hamilton can play a key role in your recovery.

This guide walks you through a clear postpartum recovery roadmap, explains when to start physiotherapy, and shows how physiotherapy can support you after birth—whether you’re weeks, months, or even years postpartum.

What Is Postpartum Physiotherapy?

Postpartum physiotherapy is specialized physiotherapy that focuses on recovery after childbirth. It addresses the physical changes that occur during pregnancy and delivery, including the pelvic floor, core, hips, and overall movement patterns.

At Flexwell Physiotherapy in Hamilton, postpartum physiotherapy is provided in a supportive, one-on-one setting, with care tailored to your delivery type, symptoms, and goals.

When Should You Start Postpartum Physiotherapy?

One of the most common questions we hear is:
“Is it too early—or too late—to start postpartum physiotherapy?”

The short answer: No.

Postpartum physiotherapy can be beneficial:

  • As early as 6 weeks postpartum (or earlier with medical clearance)
  • Months after delivery
  • Even years after childbirth

Recovery is not linear—and it’s never too late to get support.

A Postpartum Recovery Roadmap

Phase 1: Early Postpartum (0–6 Weeks)

Your body is healing. This phase is about rest, recovery, and gentle awareness.

Physiotherapy focus:

  • Education on posture, breathing, and safe movement
  • Gentle pelvic floor and core activation
  • Managing pain and discomfort
  • Guidance for daily activities like lifting and feeding

Common symptoms during this phase:

  • Perineal discomfort or C-section tenderness
  • Back or pelvic pain
  • Fatigue and heaviness

Phase 2: Early Rehabilitation (6–12 Weeks)

This is when many women are cleared for exercise—but clearance doesn’t mean your body is fully ready.

Physiotherapy focus:

  • Pelvic floor assessment and retraining
  • Core and abdominal recovery (including diastasis recti)
  • Addressing bladder leakage or pelvic pressure
  • Improving strength, mobility, and confidence

Phase 3: Strength, Function & Return to Exercise (3–6+ Months)

This phase is about rebuilding strength and returning to the activities you enjoy.

Physiotherapy focus:

  • Progressive strengthening
  • Impact readiness (running, jumping, fitness classes)
  • Managing symptoms during higher-level activity
  • Preventing long-term pelvic floor dysfunction

Common goals:

  • Returning to the gym
  • Running without leaking
  • Lifting your child comfortably
  • Feeling strong and confident again
